CLIENT Probius Bio | ROLE Industrial Designer | TIMELINE 2020 | DESIGN CONTEXT Lathrop Product Development

DX Instrument | The Probius Bio DX is a benchtop analytical platform that converts biological samples into digital signatures for cloud-based analysis. The design challenge was to create a distinctive, low-volume enclosure around the existing instrument architecture without relying on a large integrated display.

Concept Development | Early concepts explored a distinctive identity without relying on a large integrated display. The selected direction used contrasting upper and lower volumes, a strong horizontal division, and integrated access points within the existing instrument architecture.

Enclosure Development | The selected direction was developed in SolidWorks as a removable enclosure system for cast-urethane production. Individual housing sections accommodated the internal instrument, provided integration access, and preserved the intended exterior form.

Final Design | The resolved enclosure gives the compact instrument a clear identity without relying on an integrated display. The dark upper shell reduces its visual mass, while the silver lower housing and continuous teal reveal establish a strong horizontal proportion. Controls, access openings, and ventilation are integrated cleanly into the overall form.

Low Volume Production | Twenty functional instruments were produced using painted cast-urethane housing components, production graphics, and removable enclosure sections for system integration. The completed units supported Probius’s ongoing demonstrations, development, and fundraising.
